What Is a Salwar Kameez? The 3 Pieces, Explained

A salwar kameez is the outfit worn every day — and at every celebration — by women across South Asia, and by South Asian women here in the USA. It has three parts, and once you know them, shopping for one gets much easier.

The three pieces

Kameez — the tunic. A long top, usually falling to the knee or below. It can be straight, flared, short or long, with a round neck, a mandarin collar, or a V-neck, and with 3/4 sleeves or full sleeves.

Salwar — the trousers. The bottom, worn under the kameez. The cut changes the whole look: straight trousers, wide palazzo pants, or the long, flowing farshi shalwar.

Dupatta — the scarf. A long scarf, usually about 82 to 86 inches long, worn over one shoulder or draped around the neck. A dupatta turns a 2-piece set into a complete 3-piece outfit, and it is what makes a festive set feel finished.

Stitched vs unstitched

Stitched means the set is already sewn and ready to wear — you only check the measurements in inches. Unstitched means fabric that still needs a tailor. Every set at Kameez House is stitched and ready to wear, with the measurements listed on the card.

Everyday vs festive

Everyday sets are comfortable prints in easy cuts — straight trousers, short tops, soft fabrics you can wear to work, to the shops, or at home. Festive sets add embroidery, sequins, lace and a dupatta, in jewel tones or pastels, for weddings, Eid, Diwali and family functions.

The main cuts

Straight-cut: a straight kameez with straight trousers — the classic everyday shape. Palazzo: wide, fully flared trousers that move beautifully. Farshi shalwar: very long, flowing trousers, the festive favourite right now. Anarkali: a long, flared tunic, almost dress-like. Sharara: flared trousers that widen from the knee down. Our Farshi Shalwar Guide and our Straight-Cut vs Palazzo Guide explain the two most-searched cuts in detail.

Salwar or shalwar — is it the same thing?

Yes. Salwar and shalwar are the same word spelled two ways, and kameez is sometimes spelled qameez. Shops and sellers in the USA use both spellings, so search for both when you are looking.

How to choose one

Start with the measurements, not the size label: chest, kameez length and trouser length in inches. Our how-to-measure guide shows you how to take them from a kameez you already love. Then pick the cut for the occasion — straight or palazzo for every day, embroidered or 3-piece for a function.
